A large and generally very impressive gathering of imaginative and stylish horror fiction, adding several new stories to those culled from Ligotti’s previous collections Songs of a Dead DreamerGrimscribeand Noctuary Ligotti achieves a lot through a thorough interrogation of tropes – realizing they are as much lifeblood as cliche in the genre field – embracing them for their secrets, and examining their origins and resonances, instead of just merely rejecting, deconstructing or mocking them.
